“Boom Chicka Boom”- That’s What Saint Patrick’s Pupils Cry!
On Wednesday 3rd March internationally renowned storyteller and author Liz Weir visited Saint Patrick’s Academy to help them celebrate World Book Day. Liz travels the world telling stories to adults and children. She is also author of “Boom Chicka Boom”, a collection of stories for children and other works. During her storytelling sessions Liz enthralled year 8 and 9 students, parents and staff with her scary stories, amusing anecdotes and fascinating observations. During a question and answer session Liz provided great insight into the inspirations behind her creative works and regaled all with details of her meeting with the legendary Roald Dahl. At one point Liz literally had a member of staff jumping out of her seat when her scary story came to an unexpected conclusion! Liz is the third storyteller to visit Saint Patrick’s in as many years and is part of the school’s ongoing drive and commitment to raise Literacy levels throughout the school. On this day all pupils also received a free novel courtesy of Eason’s Lisburn in exchange for World Book Day tokens. Later this month there will be a grand prize giving to honour Book Review Competition winners at Key Stage 3. Plans are already underway to secure another enthralling storyteller for next year. |

Day 4 – 2 February 2010 This morning we visited a former TB Clinic, which is now a Children’s Hospital. We brought sweets, food, clothes and essential medical supplies. We then travelled to Timis Orphanage, where many young adults have moderate to severe disabilities; most commonly Autism. Again, we brought supplies and brought 16 youngsters out for a few hours to McDonald’s. Conditions were very poor there. This afternoon the group visited a ‘dual orphanage’. Downstairs, there were about 22 children who have extreme disabilities with many suffering from Hydrocepholis (swelling of the brain). Many of the students were moved to tears by what they saw – however conditions here are very good and the children are well looked after. Upstairs, about 50 girls with behavioural difficulties live; they have no disabilities. The afternoon finished off with a game of soccer in the snow.
This evening we had an excellent ‘Quiz Night’ which ended in a sing off. Tomorrow night’s entertainment brings our very first ‘Romania’s Got Talent’ to the Rina Vista Hotel! We can’t wait! More news tomorrow. |
