Dr Seamus Quinn became principal at St. Patrick's when he joined the school in 2003. He has a PHD in Neurobiology, specialising in the study of Neuropeptides and Brain Biology. Dr. Quinn has many years experience teaching science at all levels within all post-primary sectors of education. While teaching science Dr. Quinn was responsible for several groups of pupils taking part in national and International Science competitions; winning every major award on several occasions. In recognition of his achievements Dr Quinn was awarded INTEL teacher of the year on three separate occasions, the Institute of Biology Teacher of the year award and several other professional honours. To date his pupils remain the only groups from Down & Connor to have won the Irish Young Scientist or the European Young Scientist awards! In 1994, Dr Quinn was appointed to an honorary Research Post in Queens University Department of Archaeology, and has attended Forensic Archaeology Training in Bradford given by the FBI. As a result of this, he has acted as consultant on several forensic cases involving human remains. Dr Quinn has a Masters in educational management and has acted as the Northern Ireland Educational Consultant for "Glasshead", a Channel 4 production company, with whom he piloted live lessons broadcast over the internet, reflecting his extensive work with all branches of media, including TV, Radio and Press. He is a passionate opponent of social injustice and has contributed to the Bain review. Recently Dr Quinn formed part of the Northern Ireland Commission for Catholic Education Working Group on post primary transfer. On a personal level, Dr Quinn is a keen amateur astronomer - having served on the Council of the Irish Astronomical Association up until the summer of 2007. He has given many talks to the IAA and other groups on astronomical issues. Dr Quinn also is an accomplished acoustic guitarist and enjoys playing at traditional Irish Music Sessions. | |
