Students at St. Patrick's are aware of the real benefits of learning a second language. Our Polish students are enthused in learning English as a second language and are keen to develop their language skills by participating in the afterschool Language Club which is supported by teachers Miss L O'Neill and Miss O Baxter. The motto of the afterschool club is ultimately to: learn language through fun. The club takes place weekly and students have the opportunity to work in small groups and partake in a range of fun activities which are based on developing essential language skills. St. Patrick's High School provides a range of excellent resources for its students. Pupils learning English as a second language, make great use of the library, its wide collection of books, and the ICT suite. Our students are enthused about using books, magazines and the Internet to pursue their personal interests in English language. Similarly students enjoy playing language games and using ICT to enhance the learning of English. Both Miss O'Neill and Miss Baxter believe in the fundamental importance of developing language skills through communication.. Therefore 'chatting' is very welcome! The language teachers are enthusiastic and supportive in encouraging their students in their achievements and many students have successfully completed a number of mini projects such as 'My Autobiography' and have experimented with producing original forms of writing such as newspaper reports. In St. Patrick's High School teachers encourage students in their learning of an additional language which will prepare them for the vast opportunities in the world. In fact there is a growing demand for people who speak language in addition to English in areas such as marketing, advertising, teaching, management and transport to name a few! Any student wishing to joing the afterschool club are most welcome, and should see Miss O'Neill (Rm 11). Remember, learning language through fun is fun! |
