Key Stage 4

GCSE—HOME ECONOMICS CHILD DEVELOPMENT

This specification focuses on the study of the physical, social, intellectual and emotional development of young children from conception to the age of five years.

Students gain knowledge and understanding of:
  • Pregnancy
  • The needs of young children
  • The roles and responsibilities of parents
  • The social and environmental influences that affect family life
  • How important it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle
  • Home economic skills (including practical skills)



Form of Examination
Picture
Two Written Papers - 1 hour
 Each worth 20%
 40% Weighting of Overall Grade
Students tested on knowledge and understanding of:-
  • Parenthood, Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Child Development (0-5yrs)
Two Controlled Assessments
 60% Weighting of Overall Grade
  • Investigation Task (40%)
  • Short Task (20%)
There will be one tier of entry for the examination: Grade A* - G


GCSE HOME ECONOMICS - FOOD

Through studying this specification students develop knowledge and understanding of:
  • Home Economics
  • Practical Home Economic skills
  • Diet and health
  • How to be a discerning consumer
  • Human needs within a multicultural society
  • Relevant technological and scientific developments

This specification encourages students to adopt a critical and analytical approach to decision-making and problem-solving in relation to Home Economics. It also encourages them to develop as effective and independent learners.

Form of Examination
One Written Papers - 1 ½ hours
 
40% Weighting of Overall Grade
Students tested on knowledge and understanding of:-
  • Consumer Awareness
  • Diet and health
Two Controlled Assessments
 
60% Weighting of Overall Grade
  • One based on consumer Awareness
  • One based on Diet and health
There will be one tier of entry for the examination: Grade A* - G

Home Economics - KS5

We currently follow the OCR syllabus for A-level Home Economics

This is broken down into four units in total across the two years as follows;

AS  Units (Year 13)
G001: Society and Health
Assessment: External Exam

G002: Resource Management
Assessment: External Exam


A2  Units (Year 14)
G003: H.E Investigative study
Assessment: Portfolio

G004: Nutrition and Food Production
Assessment: External Exam

Throughout the course of study candidates are encouraged to develop an understanding of issues relating to:
  • Society and Health,
  • Resource Management,
  • Nutrition and Food Production
  • The Investigative Study.

The specifications, therefore, provide a suitable foundation for the study of academic or vocational courses in higher education, including careers in Food Technology, Nutritional Science, Sports Science and Diet, Consumer Protection,
and Food retail and manufacture.

It also provides a sound basis for those seeking employment in a wide range of careers such as industry, commerce, education and the health and social services.
