Safer Internet Day -  9 February 2021

This year in the UK, Safer Internet Day explores reliability online. The internet has an amazing range of information and opportunities online, but how do we separate fact from fiction?
Picture
Safer Internet Day 2021 celebrates the amazing range of information and opportunities online, and its potential to inform, connect and inspire us, whilst also looking at how young people can separate fact from fiction.

The campaign focuses on how we can know what to trust online, supporting young people to question, challenge and change the online world. It will explore how influence, persuasion and manipulation can impact young people’s decisions, opinions and what they share online.

**School transport from Monday 11th January**

Picture
Please note the following update from EA regarding transport to school from Monday 11th January.
'Following the decision that schools will move to remote learning, home to school transport will not operate to mainstream schools from Monday 11 January. Transport services for pupils attending special schools and EOTAS are continuing to operate as usual.
The Education Authority and Translink will work closely with schools if they identify vulnerable pupils or pupils of key workers, who are eligible for home to school transport, and transport support is required to attend school. Parents/guardians are asked to contact their school in relation to this. Pupils in this category can also use their school sessional passes on scheduled Translink bus and train services where appropriate.'

Period Poverty

Last Monday representatives from Saint Vincent De Paul kindly donated an array of sanitary items to our school as part of their commitment to raising awareness of Period Poverty. According to the charity Plan International, 1 in 10 girls cannot afford to buy menstrual products. In the current climate many people are struggling financially and to help address this SVP is donating free sanitary products to a number of schools in the area. The sanitary items will be freely available in all our toilets and the programme is being overseen by our Head Girl, Frances Arnott and her Deputy, Eva Donaghy. Both students spoke of their determination to destigmatize menstruation and to support all females in our school community. They stated, “Our menstrual cycle is a normal thing, and we are grateful for the donation of sanitary products from SVP. This access to sanitary products will ease the anxiety of girls from every year group coming to school on their period.“

SVP Appeal  - December 2020

This year more than ever we have realised the importance of helping others in need. Once again our students and staff give generously to ensure we played our part in St Patrick’s Parish St Vincent de Paul fundraiser. The money raised went towards food hampers, vouchers and Christmas gifts. As always, we appreciate your support and kindness.
“Kindness is doing what you can, where you are, with what you have.”

Dr Quinn's Retirement

Picture
"As the St Patrick’s Community will know I had planned to retire in the summer however the Governors asked me to defer leaving for a while.  This delay was to enable the appointment process of a new Principal to proceed, the planned building works on the Canteen and Design Technology block to begin and the school to re-open following the response to Covid 19.

Interviews for my replacement have been arranged for October, the canteen work is progressing and we have successfully re-opened!
At the BOG meeting on Monday 21st September I made clear my intention to retire at the end of September.  I will be leaving my post next Wednesday 30.09.2020, Mr Ward will assume the role of Acting Principal and Mrs McCann that of Acting Vice-Principal.

I want to thank all pupils, parents and staff for the support and hard work they have given to me over the more than 17 years I have had the privilege of being your Principal.  It has been quite a journey we have been on together, from early days when we fought to secure the future of St Patrick's, through the Post Primary Review Process, and the Raising School Standards Agenda. Battling for funds and overseeing numerous building projects added some spice to the journey!

Along the way we lost a number of valued colleagues, I will never forget the support and encouragement provided to me by the late Pauline Nichols and Mary Smith, both of whom are deeply missed.
Other esteemed colleagues are now enjoying their much deserved retirement, I particularly wish to thank Pat Mulholland and Teresa Devlin for the outstanding contribution they made to the life of St Patrick’s over the years, and the friendship they showed to me as Principal.

The contribution to school life, support and encouragement of the present Senior Leadership Team, Mr James Ward, Mrs Grainne McCann and Ms Roisin Clarke cannot be overstated.  Knowing the school is in the hands of this SLT gives me much reassurance as I step down.

St Patrick’s has always been at its best when we have acted as a community.  I know that moving forward, regardless of who is appointed Principal, this truth will endure; the future of the school is in your hands.  Success can only come about if everyone connected to the school continues to embrace the Catholic ideals of service, love and commitment to the common good because at our core we have a moral imperative to cater for the children entrusted to us."
