Key Stage 4

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - GCSE

The GCSE Physical Education programme of study provides students with exciting opportunities to lead a healthy and active lifestyle by choosing from a variety of roles and activities in which to participate in physical activity.  It further develops their knowledge and skills obtained from the various experiences they had at key stage 3 level.
The content of this GCSE is designed to enable students to enjoy and understand the benefits of living a healthy and active lifestyle; to provide a route to further study in Further Education awards, such as A levels and/or the new Diplomas, and to Higher Education in PE as well as to related career opportunities.
 
The course is a 2 year course which is assessed through a combination of theoretical and practical elements.  The pupils will have one written examination paper at the end of their 2nd year and a series of practical assessments throughout the two year course.
 
Practical Element (40%):
The facts, concepts, terminology and methods that you will learn while studying the course can be applied to improve your physical fitness and your skills in your selected physical activities.  Pupils will select 3 activities to teach and performance will be assessed.  Pupils will also teach a skill from 1 of the 3 activities.
 
Coursework (20%):
The theoretical element will help you to analyse and develop a balanced, healthy lifestyle.
Independent research using other resources as well as your own practical experience will enable you to complete this section of the course.
 
External assessment -Exam paper (40%)
This will be assessed by one written examination paper of 1 hour and 30 minutes.  The exam paper will require you to answer questions on key influences that impact on balanced, healthy lifestyles; participation in physical activities; and on the facts, concepts, terminology, principles and methods needed to be able to plan or evaluate exercise /training sessions and programmes.
 
The exam paper will also require you to plan effective exercise/training sessions and programmes for a range of individuals and their circumstances.

Key Stage 5

SPORT - LEVEL 3 NATIONAL CERTIFICATE

Entry Requirements: Pupils must have a keen interest in sport.
 
In order to achieve the OCR Level 3 National Certificate in Sport, candidates must achieve a minimum PASS grade for:
  • 4 mandatory units
  • 2 optional units
  • 1 Specialist unit

Awards for units are as follows:
  • Unit Credit Value (UCV) X 7 points for unit graded at PASS
  • Unit Credit Value (UCV) X 8 points for unit graded at MERIT
  • Unit Credit Value (UCV) X 9 point for unit graded at DISTINCTION
  • 0 points for a unit graded at FAIL
  
The total points for each unit over the course of the 2 years will determine the final grade of your certificate:  Units taken are:
Mandatory Units
  • Unit 1: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport
  • Unit 2: The Physiology of Fitness
  • Unit 3: Assessing Risk in Sport

Specialist Unit
  • Unit 7: Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise

Optional Unit
  • Unit 4: Fitness Training and Programming
  • Unit 5: Sports Coaching
  • Unit 9: Practical Individual Sports

This course may provide a starting point for those students wishing to pursue a University qualification or a career in the Sport and Leisure Industry.
